内容简介：
The lecture will analyse the thoughts andwritings on the British Empire of a selected number of political thinkers whomade important contributions to political theorising on the British Empire,both in terms of what kind of entity it was and in terms of whether or not itwas to be supported or criticised. After a few words on Montesquieu, thelecture will focus on Adam Smith and his views on both the empire in NorthAmerica and the empire in India. The lecture will then move to on Edmund Burke,again both with regard to America and with regard to India. Analysis of thethoughts of the main British Utilitarians, Jeremy Bentham, James Mill and JohnStuart Mill will follow. Then the work of John R. Seeley will be discussed, tobe followed by an account of the strong resistance to the British Empire on thepart of the British Comtists (Frederic Harrison and others). Finally, theideals of Alfred Zimmern on the “Third British Empire” or “Commonwealth” willbe analysed.
