讲座主题：Commerce as an “Affair of State”: Hume’s Political Economy in HistoricalPerspective

内容简介：

Althoughmany writers have discussed the transformative role of commerce in thehistoriography of Enlightenment, Hume’s political thought has usually beenconsidered as less ground-breaking than that of his seventeenth-centurycounterparts. This view, however, underestimates Hume’s path-breaking idea thatthe rise of maritime trade from the end of the fifteenth century onwards hasshifted the grounds of modern politics. Heattached great significance to the role of commerce in the transformation ofEuropean society, from its rude ancient beginnings to commercial modernity.This is the most important point he made against the basic premises of Whighistoriography of his time. We shall see how he demonstrated that modernEnglish liberty was owed primarily to England’sadoption of the European methods of market economy, rather than to the legacyof ancient Saxon system. This is crucial for us to understand his entirely newtheory of the foundation of the state.

魏佳，上海外国语大学英国研究中心兼职研究员，英国剑桥大学历史学博士。专著《Commerce and Modern Politicsin Hume’s History of England》将于2016年在英国出版（中文版预计2017年初在中国出版）。在Hume Studies，Internaitonal Relations and Diplomacy等期刊发表文章多篇。研究领域为：西方政治思想史、政治经济学、国际关系。
